The 2018 Volkswagen Passat is a solid car in a class filled with great cars. Though it has loads of room and a smooth ride, rival cars have nicer interiors and nimbler handling. These few drawbacks place it in the lower third of our rankings.

Pros & Cons

  • Extremely spacious seats
  • Large trunk
  • Smooth ride
  • Competitors are more upscale inside
  • Rivals have more impressive tech offerings

New for 2018

  • New turbo-four base engine
  • New Passat GT model
  • Longer warranty than previous model years

While the Volkswagen Passat doesn’t have the highest ranking, it’s still a good car. It has an enormously roomy cabin with comfortable seats. The Passat has two peppy engines to choose from, and it delivers a smooth, composed ride that makes it great for cruising around. However, some competitors have more athletic handling, additional tech features, and a higher-quality cabin. With such stiff competition in the highly competitive midsize car class, this VW seems mediocre next to its rivals.

Should I Buy the Volkswagen Passat?

The Passat isn’t the best option. It’s a good car, but there are many better midsize cars out there, some of which have lower starting prices than the VW. The Honda Accord is a better all-around car that surpasses this Volkswagen in nearly every way. If you like the Passat but don’t need as much space, check out the smaller Volkswagen Jetta.
